    Responsibilities

    The Opportunity

    Transcontinental Packaging seeks a candidate for a position in its R&D Laboratory Services Group supporting flexible packaging business initiatives of the company. The successful candidate will characterize raw materials, product film structures and processes using chemical, structural, and physical property analysis. The candidate will bring together knowledge of material science and chemistry to assist in the completion of business goals. This includes an understanding of manufacturing processes such as cast and blown extrusion, adhesive and extrusion lamination, and printing processes involving polymer films, paper and foils.

     

    The position performs laboratory duties including common physical strength and appearance tests, transportation and destructive testing of packages, chemical and analytical characterization and similar evaluations. The position will also involve the support of production and pilot machine trials and the evaluation of new raw materials and product structures undertaken by R&D Product Development groups. This role participates in the daily operation of the laboratory, which includes maintaining proper testing supplies and interacting with customers to insure the lab is meeting their expectations.

    Qualifications

    Requirements:

    • Work experience in laboratory testing in the flexible packaging, paper/board or other related materials industry.
    • Experience with and/or working knowledge of the physical strength and analytical testing, failure analysis or related characterizations of packaging materials and structures.
    • Ability to manipulate large format packages/bags weighing up to 50lbs.
    • Experience with the following manufacturing processes: blown and cast polymer film, extrusion or adhesive lamination, printing, heat sealing of flexible packaging, paper and board manufacturing.
    • Successfully complete a 6 - 12 month on-the-job training period.

     

    Basic Duties and Major Performance Responsibilities:

    • Conducts physical testing of flexible packaging materials and have a good understanding of lab equipment and can troubleshoot problems when they arise.
    • Generate, document, report information, and results with accuracy and ensure that the proper procedures are employed. Have a good ability to question data and unexpected outcomes.
    • Communicate with customers to understand the testing objective and discuss results.
    • Participate on the safety committee and conduct all work in a safe manner.
    • Assist as needed in other duties and activities as assigned by your manager.

    Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

    • Good verbal communication and organizational skills and an understanding of statistics.
    • Knowledge of ASTM and TAPPI standards as they relate to flexible packaging.
    • Knowledge of computer software, including: Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Lotus Notes..
