  • Overview

    Designs, develops, and supervises all aspects of electrical control systems, equipment, and machinery. Requires a strong background in automation, PLC programming and electrical controls.

    Responsibilities

    The Controls Engineer is responsible for applying acquired technical skills and project experience to the design and execution of the control engineering portion of all company projects. The Controls Engineer must have a thorough understanding of computer hardware and system architecture. They will be responsible for design, analysis, and implementation of advanced controls and safety functions. They will also collaborate with the various engineering disciplines to create controls designs, project schedules, test plans, and other project documentation from the concept phase through successful product launch. The Controls Engineer is expected to work independently and as a part of a team in a fast-paced collaborative environment. This individual needs the energy to drive the programming and startup activities of new equipment installation, and improvements to existing facilities. The Controls Engineer will be responsible for the design, integration, implementation, troubleshooting, repair, and the upgrades and expansion of electrical control systems used in manufacturing. In addition, proven troubleshooting skills are necessary. Requires a Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering or Computer Engineering, and 3-5 years of experience in the field or in a related area.

     

    Design

    • Code PLC programs and prepares documentation based on project design specifications.
    • Field start-up on PLC-controlled projects; support software engineering on start-ups.
    • Comply with all corporate, plant and third party safety and environmental policies and regulations to ensure a safe, legal, and environmentally friendly manufacturing process at all times.
    • responsible for the installation and technical support of PLC based hardware and software
    • Support manufacture, build and validation of systems which include pneumatics, communication networks, touchscreens, pushbuttons, and software integration.
    • Works with manufacturing engineering personnel and operations support teams to rollout new technologies impacting productivity, including required training, as well as the troubleshooting of current equipment and processes/procedures.
    • Support the development of business cases for new projects to deliver financial targets including risk analysis, options evaluation, cost comparison, design considerations and quantification of benefits to meet corporate vision.

     

    Project Management/Coordination

    • Maintain up-to-date files of all relevant paperwork on projects. Document all field changes on all appropriate electrical drawings.
    • Consult with project managers to ensure proper coordination and adherence to schedules in mechanical installation, electrical installation, and field start-up.
    • Oversee workflow and support internal and external resources to ensure timely delivery of project, expected quality, and allotted budget.
    • Conducts training, both classroom and on the job, on the complexity of machine operations, and set-up, and supervises ongoing training. Trains technicians on Programmable Logic Controllers (PLC) for proper equipment operation.
    • Optimizes programs, set-ups, methods, and procedures on manufacturing equipment and processes to achieve maximum productivity and highest quality while operating at an optimum cost level.
    • Provide technical support during the start-up and qualification of new equipment and processes.
    • Develop and manage capital and expense budgets to meet project objectives.
    • Support the development of business cases for new projects to deliver financial targets including risk analysis, options evaluation, cost comparison, design considerations and quantification of benefits to meet corporate vision.
    • Drive continuous process improvement through the ability to recognize unnecessary complexities and process gaps, and proactively drive implementation of strategies to execute effective solutions.
    • Assists in the review and approval of contractor plans, including goals and objectives, work breakdown structure, detailed scope descriptions, detailed schedules, risk management. approach, milestone descriptions, budgets, and staffing requirements.

     

    Qualifications

    Qualifications (Preferred)

      • Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering or Computer Engineering.
      • Experience in controls design and project engineering.   Experience in the material handling industry is a plus.
      • PLC Programming experience, preferably in Allen Bradley PLC 5, Control Logix, and Compact Logix.
      • Network Experience including Ethernet, ARCNET, Profibus, and Modbus a plus
      • Project management skills.
      • Excellent oral, written communication, and time management skills. 
      • High degree of self-motivation; strong organizational skills.
      • Demonstrates strong problem solving skills and root cause determination developing effective corrective actions using originality as required and monitoring their progress through completion.

     

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

     

    • Ability to develop clear and logical graphical interfaces. (HMI’s)
    • Ability to understand electrical schematics and wiring diagrams.
    • Proficient in standard software applications including MS Office, project management software and web-based meetings/communication software.
    • Ability to work with a team and communicate well with co-workers and customers, including situations where work is fast-paced and deadline-oriented.
    • Excellent organization skills with attention to detail.
    • Required Experience with PLCs and motion controls.
    • Machine level troubleshooting and debugging.
    • Assists Maintenance Manager and Engineering in all areas of Machines/Maintenance as relates to set-up, installation, adjusting, repairing, testing, calibrating and operations of line machinery.
